On July 15, 2007, a story appeared in The Columbus Dispatch about the shortage of local psychiatric hospital beds, "Shortage of Beds getting worse" by Misti Crane. In response to this article, ADAMH's Board of Trustees Chair, Thomas J. Bonasera, wrote a letter to the editor addressing some of the concerns from the article.
When I sent in my application for the Specialized Docket Internship with the Mental Health Court, I wasn't sure what to expect. As a pre-law undergraduate, I knew that I wanted to immerse myself in the judicial system. I wanted to get a taste of what real justice (or injustice, for that matter) was like. Beyond this, I felt a pull to the Mental Health Court in particular. Having seen the face of mental illness in my own home and witnessed the struggle through a child's eyes, I appreciated the challenge this specialty docket faced.

As the CEO of the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board of Franklin County, I know that recovering from an alcohol or drug addiction is not easy. Many of the people who struggle to recover from an addiction find effective treatment for their substance abuse problems and go on to lead, healthy productive lives. Inaccurate, yet commonly heard myths try to say that addiction is a sign of personal weakness. The fact remains that drug addiction is a chronic medical condition, just like high blood pressure, asthma or diabetes.
For her entire life, until just a few years ago, Aubrey Victoria Touchman felt as though she was trapped in a nightmare. A survivor of physical and sexual abuse from an early age, she was constantly struggling with her mental health. It was impossible for Aubrey to maintain employment, find healthy relationships or look into her past. She was always moving from one bad situation to another and it was clear that she was out of control.

On May 23, 2007, at the Annual Youth to Youth Awards Banquet, 16 Franklin County teens were honored for receiving the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. The President's Volunteer Service Award is a way to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our Nation.
