Amethyst's SummerQuest Receives National Award
Amethyst's SummerQuest Program is a 2009 winner of the National Exemplary Award for Innovative Substance Abuse Prevention Programs, Practices, & Policies. The nationally-acclaimed summer camp celebrated its 12th year and a record number of campers this year.

Operating from June through August, SummerQuest is a 12-week intensive intervention day camp for children ages 6-14 whose mothers are involved in Amethyst's long-term addiction recovery program. The camp fosters healing and emotional growth through individual counseling, animal-assisted therapy, social competency development, prevention education and good old-fashioned camp fun!

Most of the children who attend SummerQuest have witnessed or experienced chronic trauma and abuse, have emotional, developmental or behavioral problems related to the traumatic experiences of their childhood, and have had inconsistent formal education. "A major goal (of SummerQuest) is to help children avoid the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs through the development of positive social and behavioral life skills," says camp founder Mandy McGlone, "Reaching out to the kids and teaching them through fun activities at camp is a great way to connect and build memories that will last a lifetime."

For over 25 years, Amethyst, Inc. has provided alcohol and drug treatment, supportive housing, intensive case management, and education/employment support for women and their children. For more information about Amethyst and the SummerQuest Program, please contact Teresa Rios-Bishop at (614) 221-7293 teresa@amethyst-inc.org or visit www.amethyst-inc.org.

SummerQuest's Goal is to fight the statistics:
The Ohio Alliance of Recovery Providers (OARP) and The University of Akron Institute for Health and Social Policy examined substance abuse and children in 2008 in Ohio:

  • Of the over 2.8 million children in Ohio, it is estimated that over 700,000 are affected in some way by substance abuse.
  • Approximately 79,000 Ohio youths either abuse or are dependent on illicit drugs.

Rosemont Center

Aberdeen Cottage Now Accepting Girls
Rosemont Center is now accepting adolescent females into our Aberdeen Group Cottage, an independent living home for children seeking emancipation from Franklin County Children's Services. Aberdeen cottage offers housing for up to four girls ages 15 through 18; where they learn life skills for living in the "real world" under supervision. The Aberdeen Group Cottage services are based on a continuum of care for adolescent females who are dependent, neglected, abused and have severe and chronic mental health problems.

Aberdeen Cottage is a safe, positive, nurturing place for young people to turn their lives around. It is a place for young girls to work on personal goals, learn about themselves, and learn positive ways of dealing with difficulties they may be facing. Adolescents who are moving toward independence strive to reach goals based on their personal choices. Supports that will help girls become connected with independence are relationships with family members, friends, teachers, co-workers and communities.

The Rosemont Center staff members operate as transition facilitators, keeping in mind the normal developmental tasks that lead to independence but with special attention to the interdependence with emotional, physical, social and spiritual supports required for successful adult functioning.

At Rosemont Center, we believe that every young person has the potential to be successful if they can find that special caring adult in their life. Not only do we provide that caring adult, but also the additional assets that youth need to learn and grow. Assets such as educational skills, positive peer relationships, constructive use of leisure time, a sense of family and community, and hope.

For more information about Rosemont Center or the Aberdeen Cottage please visit www.rosemont.org or contact Residential Program Director Robbie Fuller at rfuller@rosemont.org.

Eagle Heights Academy Expands Programming
Rosemont Center is expanding our partial hospitalization program to include GED programming. Rosemont Center operates a day treatment program called "Eagle Heights Academy". Eagle Heights is an on-site specialized therapeutic day treatment for students unable to be successful in a "traditional" school setting. The population consists of females and males ages 11-18 with regular and special education needs. Eagle Heights achieves success with students through family, individual, and group treatment. The students, ages 16 through 18, entering Eagle Heights tend to fall into two different categories. The first have most of their high school credits intact. However, due to their behavioral issues they don't have enough credits to graduate. These students will follow a credit recovery program that enables them to earn back credits and graduate from high school. Students will be supplied tutors and computer assisted learning that gets them back on track to receive their diploma.

The second type of adolescent comes to Eagle Heights with little or no high school credits due to suspensions, expulsions, or other behavioral issues. For these adolescents it is unrealistic that they will graduate from a traditional school. Often, they cannot return to the traditional school setting because of extreme behavioral/emotional problems. Receiving a GED is a better track to prepare them for the future. Current settings for GED curriculum do not account for the social and behavioral issues these children face. The students tend to be dismissed from the programs because of their disruptions. Rosemont Center has expanded the current curriculum at Eagle Heights to include training for work readiness by providing the GED program coupled with the necessary therapeutic treatment these adolescents so desperately need. This type of work is not currently available elsewhere.
