A Message From The Director

Dear Greater Columbus Sports Commission supporter:

Welcome to the Winter 2008 edition of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission's e-newsletter.

As we enter March, we here at the Sports Commission are in the midst of supporting a long list of sporting events that will be held in our city in the first half this year.

Here are just a few of the events our community has already hosted this year: AVP Crocs Hot Winter Nights Tour in Nationwide Arena for the first time; the first two (Ohio Valley Region Kick-Off Classic and Earlybird Extravaganza) of many major volleyball tournaments that will be held in the Greater Columbus Convention Center this year; the second-annual Duck 'N Dodge National Dodgeball Tour event at Easton Sports Barn; the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships; and the Arnold Sports Festival, OHSAA state wrestling tournament and the PBA Tour's Don Johnson Buckeye State Classic, all of which were held last weekend.

March is annually one of our biggest months, and that is even truer in 2008. Major sporting events in Columbus that month include girls and boys basketball, and ice hockey state championships; the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing National Championships; the NCAA Women's Division I Swimming and Diving Championships; and the Women's Synchronized Swimming National Championships.

So, in late February and March alone, our city hosts three major-college national championships; five high school state championships; the Arnold Sports Festival, which attracts more than 150,000 people; and a PBA Tour event at Sequoia Pro Bowl, whose finals were televised live on ESPN.

More volleyball—this time the OVR Junior Championships and a Mizuno Mideast Qualifier—will be held at the convention center later this spring, along with the return of two large amateur wrestling tournaments—the annual Tournament of Champions and the USA Wrestling Kids Regional. The city will also host the OHSAA boys tennis, boys and girls track & field, and baseball championships, all from May 30-June 7.

And, as many of you already know, the 2008 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium from June 20-22. We strongly feel Columbus can become a leading track & field destination in the U.S., and this is our first opportunity to showcase Columbus to the nation's track & field community.

To stay up to date on all events, please visit our Web site at www.ColumbusSports.org on a regular basis. Among the many features you'll find is an updated Calendar of Events that includes hundreds of professional, collegiate and youth sporting events.

Thank you again for your support of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission.

Sincerely,
Linda Shetina Logan
Executive Director
