A Message From the Director

Dear Greater Columbus Sports Commission supporter:

Welcome to the Winter 2009 issue of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission's e-newsletter.

March is always a busy and exciting time for the Greater Columbus Sports Commission, as our city, in partnership with the Ohio High School Athletic Association, annually hosts wrestling, boys basketball, girls basketball, ice hockey and gymnastics state championships each March. Our own version of March Madness kicks off this weekend with the State Wrestling Championships at the Value City Arena.

This year, though, is particularly exciting as our community also prepares for a variety of national and regional events, including:

  • OHSAA wrestling, boys basketball, girls basketball, ice hockey and gymnastics state championships
  • PBA Tour (March 1-7, Sequoia Pro Bowl) Don Johnson Buckeye State Eliminator
  • Arnold Sports Festival (March 4-7, downtown Columbus)
  • McDonald's High School All-American Basketball Games (March 29 and 31, Value City Arena)
  • USA Swimming Grand Prix (April 1-3, McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion)
  • National Association of Sports Commission's Sports Event Symposium (April 12-14, Greater Columbus Convention Center and Hyatt Regency)

We were thrilled to learn that Jared Sullinger of Northland High School in Columbus, an Ohio State recruit, was chosen to participate in the McDonald's game. It will be an honor for our city to host those nationally-recognized high school all-star games.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournaments in town this month are among 17 that we host throughout the year. I encourage everybody to get out to a game and support both the student-athletes and the OHSAA for bringing these state championships to our city. The OHSAA is a valued partner of the Sports Commission. Check out www.ohsaa.org for more information.

The 2010 The Morning Sports Report will feature a rare reunion of Ohio State's four living Heisman Trophy winners – Howard 'Hopalong' Casady, Archie Griffin, Eddie George and Troy Smith. Mark your calendar for June 22 for that exciting event.

Also this year, once again we will host A Day In the Loop on May 13 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. This half-day driving school is a great opportunity for team building and developing corporate relationships.

To stay up to date on all events, please visit our Web site at www.ColumbusSports.org on a regular basis. Among the many features is an updated Calendar of Events that includes hundreds of professional, collegiate and youth sporting events.

Thank you again for your support of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission.

Sincerely,
Linda Shetina Logan
Executive Director
